What Are You Holding Onto? Why Fall Is a Good Time to Let Go 🍂

The cool breezes, crisp air, and changing leaves are here, and eventually, the trees will let those leaves go. Fall seems to bring a sense of calmness back to our lives. We start spending more time indoors and enjoying more time with those who matter most.

What I love most about fall is that it is a beautiful reminder that change is not only necessary, but beautiful. Just as the trees let go of their leaves, fall is a great time to go through your space and let go of what no longer serves you or your home.

Clutter isn't always about being messy or disorganized. Sometimes, it's about not knowing when or how to get rid of items that maybe once served a purpose but no longer do. We keep things for all sorts of reasons, memories, guilt, fear that we'll need them later, or not wanting to spend more money replacing them if we do.

How many times have you stared at an item you no longer want but thought to yourself, “But I might need it someday…”?

That feeling is totally natural. Getting rid of things can be hard and sometimes even scary, but let fall be a reminder that letting things go can be beautiful.

Give yourself some grace when decluttering. If something genuinely has sentimental value, keep it! Organizing isn't about purging everything. It's about genuinely going through your things and deciding if they serve the life you are currently living.

That's why when my team and I are organizing for a client, we never make those decisions for them. I always tell them to ask themselves the following questions:

  • Do I actually use this?

  • Does it fit my life right now?

  • Would I buy this again today?

  • Am I keeping it because I love it, or because I feel guilty letting it go?

  • If I needed this someday, how difficult would it be to replace?

  • Could someone else benefit from this more than I currently do?

That last question is often eye-opening for many of my clients. They realize they can donate items that may become useful, and even loved, by someone else.

Fall is often filled with food drives, but there may be items in your home right now that could help someone in need. Gently used toys, for example, can be especially helpful around this time of year as many parents look for affordable options for their children during the holidays.

Sometimes it's easier to let go when we know something we no longer need can be useful or even bring a smile to someone else.

So, I challenge you to think of one space in your home that you may want to organize. It doesn't have to be a large space. Look through the items, ask yourself the questions above, and let go of what no longer serves the life you are currently living.

And if you find that you have a larger job that needs a little more manpower, reach out to us. We'd be happy to help. 🍂
